Some of the books I’ve read this summer, in case you’re looking for something new to pick up:
This is Where I Leave You (nerotic 30 something guy is locked up with his nutty family as they sit for his father’s shiva)
Secrets to Happiness (a group of 30 something neurotic new yorkers…are you sensing a pattern here? these characters are so real, I swear a few were plucked straight from my life)
How to Be Single (not as good a the one above, a fictional story about a woman who is fed up with how single woman in the US behaves decide to traverse the globe to see how our sisters manage in other parts of the world. I found the whole thing depressing and embarrassing to my kind)
One Day (the story of an english couple from the day they meet at 21 over the next 20 years, each chapter is the same day a year later)
Let Me In (The Swedish book that spawned the haunting vampire movie has finally been translated in English. I love me some vamps, but this books scared the bejesus out of me)
A Secret Rage (what did I follow up the vampire book with? a book about a serial rapist. Not too smart; slept with my lights on for a couple of weeks between the two. I wanted to read a Charlaine Harris book that wasn’t part of the Sookie Stackhouse series. Not as rich a plot, but she has a knack for creating inviting southern environments with appealing characters)
Some Girls (no literary masterpiece, but facilitating true story about a girl in the prince of Brunei’s harem)
The Happiness Project (woman attempts to gather knowledge from all the self help advice resources, from Oprah to the Dali Lama, and create a happier life for herself. I’ll admit, I found her a bit annoying, but there were some interesting statistics and advice)
Photo taken at Posman Books in Chelsea Market, one of my favorites. I swear that even with my new iPad I’m still going to purchase the occasional paper book…what can I say, a girl’s gotta read in the tub.
