I took a dance class last night

My gym has a class on Wednesday nights called the NYC Dance Project, taught by Abby Goldenberg. I was a bit skeptical at first, not knowing what to expect based on the description online and was even more nervous when I arrived and everyone seemed to know each other and were outfitted in dance troupe attire. To make the situation worse, when I introduced myself to the instructor and indicated it was my first time she gave me one of those “yikes” looks and asked if I’d had any dance training. I don’t know if junior high and high school cheer squads in southwest Nebraska qualified as “training” so I had to will myself not to turn and run for the door. The adorable gay boy standing at my side gave me a squeeze and told me he thought I’d be great and it was enough to keep me from bolting. I’m so glad I didn’t give into my nerves because I ended up having the most fun in ages. We learned a “routine” to Britney Spear’s Toxic. All my memories of summertime cheer camp came flooding back and I was so in my element I couldn’t stop smiling. Abby breaks the routine down into chucks of 2-3 8 counts and we practice with and without music until she feels everyone is ready to move on. She then divides the class into two groups and we perform for each other. I’m not going to lie, I was a bit crap at getting down the moves (they had learned the routine the week before, so I was way behind), but it was still great fun. If I’m being really honest, I practiced a little when I got home…I’m sure the people that live across the street and look directly into my window thought I was a nut job. I’m definitely adding this class into my weekly workout regime. I was sweating my tush off for an hour, but was having so much fun I barley noticed.
